Coinbase review: the friendliest app, with a small Asian footprint

Coinbase is the US-listed exchange that makes buying crypto look easy. In Asia, though, it is properly licensed in only a couple of markets, and the one-tap Buy button is not cheap. Here is what you get, what it costs and where it actually works.

  • MASlicensed in Singapore
  • 2026INR deposits in India
  • 2023left Japan retail
  • US FinCEN-registered MSB
  • Money transmitter licences in 30+ US states
  • PCI DSS Level 1

01The short verdict

If you live in Singapore or India and want a clean, well-documented place to buy your first Bitcoin, Coinbase is a safe pick. If you live in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, the Philippines or mainland China, it is mostly not a realistic option: it is either unlicensed there, has left, or is blocked. A lot of “Coinbase sign-up not working” searches are really about geography, not about the app.

We score Coinbase 8.4 out of 10. It earns points for transparency and usability: as a listed company it discloses its finances and risks publicly, and its buy flow is one of the hardest to get wrong. It loses points on price and reach. The simple Buy button’s spread plus card fee can easily add 3–4% to a small purchase, and most Asian markets have no Coinbase licence at all.

02Licences and where Coinbase works in Asia

“Is Coinbase available in my country?” has no single answer in Asia. The table below is built from regulator registers and published reporting. Remember that being able to download an app is not the same as the company being licensed where you live.

Coinbase status in key Asian markets (October 2026)
MarketStatusDetails
SingaporeLicensedCoinbase Singapore Pte Ltd holds a Major Payment Institution licence from the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS). SGD bank deposits are supported; MAS rules bar licensed platforms from accepting locally issued credit cards.
IndiaRegistered, INR livePaused in 2023; FIU-IND’s March 2025 order issued only a warning. Onboarding restarted in late 2025, and INR deposits, withdrawals and spot trading launched in May 2026, per CoinDesk.
JapanExitedCoinbase K.K. is still on the FSA register (No. 00028) but marked as handling no crypto. Retail service ended in 2023.
Hong KongUnlicensedNever applied for an SFC VATP licence; secondary sources say it does not serve Hong Kong retail.
TaiwanNot registeredAbsent from the FSC’s VASP AML registration list, so it may not solicit Taiwan users.
South KoreaNot registeredUpbit accepts deposits from Coinbase but will not send withdrawals to it.
PhilippinesBlockedIn December 2025 the NTC, at the BSP’s request, ordered ISPs to block 50 unlicensed platforms; Coinbase went dark soon after.
IndonesiaHaltedNamed among the illegal platforms stopped by OJK and the Satgas PASTI task force.
Mainland ChinaNot servedExcluded by its terms; crypto trading services are illegal under the 2021 PBoC notice.

Put simply, of the 19 Asian markets we cover, Coinbase is both licensed and wired into local currency in just two. Readers in Singapore should compare it with locally licensed platforms such as Coinhako and Independent Reserve. In India it competes with FIU-registered homegrown exchanges like CoinDCX and ZebPay. For readers in mainland China, the honest answer is that there is no legal sign-up route.

03Coinbase fees: simple buy vs Advanced

Coinbase runs two pricing systems, and many users only ever see one. Tap Buy on the home screen and you get a quote that already includes a spread of about 0.5%, plus a fee that depends on how you pay. With a card, the total can approach 4%.

The other system is Coinbase Advanced, the order-book screen that replaced Coinbase Pro. Entry-tier fees are roughly 0.40% for maker orders and 0.60% for taker orders, falling as your 30-day volume grows. On a $1,000 Bitcoin purchase, a market order on Advanced costs around $6; the same purchase through simple buy with a card can run $30–40.

  • Simple buy · card≈ $30–40
  • Simple buy · bank≈ $10–15
  • Advanced · taker≈ $6
  • Advanced · maker≈ $4

Our advice: use simple buy for a small first purchase to learn the flow. If you plan to buy regularly, deposit local currency by bank transfer and place orders on Advanced. Our exchange fee comparison puts Coinbase next to its rivals.

04How to buy crypto on Coinbase, step by step

These steps apply where Coinbase officially operates, such as Singapore and India. We describe the mobile app; the website follows the same order.

  1. Install the official app and sign up

Download only from the App Store, Google Play or coinbase.com, and check the developer name. Register with an email you use, set a strong password and add your phone number.

  2. Verify your identity (KYC)

Pick your real country of residence, upload a passport or national ID and complete the selfie check. Indian users are typically also asked for a PAN. Review takes minutes to a day.

  3. Turn on strong 2FA

Switch from SMS codes to an authenticator app or a hardware security key in the security settings.

  4. Add a payment method

Link a local bank account (SGD or INR) or a debit card. Licensed Singapore platforms cannot take locally issued credit cards.

  5. Buy

Tap Buy, choose the asset and amount, then read the Total and Coinbase fee lines on the preview before confirming. To pay less, place the order on Advanced instead.

  6. Decide where to keep it

Small amounts can stay in your account. As the balance grows, move it to a self-custody wallet such as the Base app or a hardware wallet.

On timing: card purchases are effectively instant, while bank deposits take anywhere from minutes to a business day depending on the rail. If you are new and paid by card, Coinbase may hold the coins for a period before you can withdraw them to an outside wallet. That is a fraud control, not a fault.

05Website and app UX

Coinbase’s design philosophy is to keep the complexity on its side. The home screen shows your balance and a handful of big buttons (Buy, Sell, Send, Receive), with charts and news pushed down the page. For a first-time buyer that restraint is valuable. The trade-off is that the Advanced screen and the detailed fee breakdown sit a few taps deeper than they should.

Support is English-first. Which interface languages you see depends on your regional version, and the help centre is mostly in English, so sorting out a frozen account can take patience if English is not your first language.

06Security and the Base app

Coinbase’s safety case rests more on disclosure than on marketing. As a US-listed company it must report its financial position and material incidents, and its Singapore and India entities answer to local regulators. At account level it supports authenticator apps, hardware security keys and a withdrawal address allowlist; we recommend switching on all three.

Illustration of a wallet with a Bitcoin symbol, representing moving coins to self-custody

Keep two products apart. Your Coinbase account is custodial: Coinbase holds the keys. The Base app is self-custody: you hold the recovery phrase, and Coinbase cannot restore it for you. Moving coins from one to the other is easy, but lose the phrase and the funds are gone. See our best crypto wallets guide for other options.

An exchange account is not your wallet

Impersonation scams are common. A fake “Coinbase support” agent claims your account is at risk and asks you to move coins to a “safe address” or read out a code. Anyone asking for your recovery phrase or 2FA code is a scammer. Our crypto security guide covers the usual tricks.

07Pros and cons

Pros

  • US-listed with public financial disclosure
  • MAS-licensed in Singapore; INR rails in India since 2026
  • Best-in-class beginner interface with a visible fee line
  • Reasonable fees on Advanced
  • Smooth hand-off to its own Base app wallet

Cons

  • Unlicensed or absent in most Asian markets
  • Simple-buy spread plus card fee is expensive
  • English-first support
  • Left Japan in 2023; blocked or halted in the Philippines and Indonesia
  • Does not serve mainland China residents
8.4/ 10

Transparent and easy, if you live in the right place

Coinbase suits beginners in Singapore and India: clear licensing, a simple flow and lower costs once you graduate to Advanced. Elsewhere in Asia it is not the first choice, and a locally licensed exchange should come first.

08Coinbase alternatives

If Coinbase does not serve you, or you find it too expensive, consider these directions:

  • A similarly security-minded international exchange: our Kraken review. It has the longest-running proof of reserves, though it also left Japan.
  • An app with a crypto card: our Crypto.com review. It is licensed in Singapore and Dubai.
  • A quick card purchase: our CEX.IO review. It takes Visa, Mastercard and Apple Pay but does not accept residents of Japan, Singapore or India and holds no Asian licence.
  • Local licensed exchanges: OSL and HashKey in Hong Kong (buy crypto in Hong Kong), bitFlyer and GMO Coin in Japan (buy crypto in Japan), FSC-registered providers in Taiwan (buy crypto in Taiwan).

FAQ

Can I use Coinbase in mainland China?

No. Coinbase’s terms do not cover mainland China residents, and under the 2021 notice from the People’s Bank of China and nine other agencies (Yinfa [2021] No. 237) offshore exchanges serving mainland residents are engaged in illegal financial activity. We don’t publish workarounds. If you genuinely live in a market where Coinbase operates, such as Singapore or India, sign up as a resident with local documents.

How long does a Coinbase purchase take to arrive?

Card purchases usually settle within seconds to a few minutes, and the coins show in your balance straight away. For new accounts, Coinbase may temporarily hold coins bought by card before you can send them to an outside wallet; that is an anti-fraud measure. Bank deposits depend on the local rail and take from minutes to one business day.

What are Coinbase’s fees?

The simple Buy button prices in a spread of about 0.5% plus a payment-method fee, so a card purchase can cost close to 4% in total. Coinbase Advanced (formerly Coinbase Pro) is an order-book screen with entry-tier fees of roughly 0.40% maker and 0.60% taker, falling with 30-day volume. Fees change; the order preview is the final word.

Is Coinbase safe? Could it go bust?

Coinbase is listed on Nasdaq (ticker COIN) and publishes audited financial statements, which makes it one of the more transparent exchanges. Listing is not a guarantee, though: any custodial platform carries counterparty risk. For larger amounts, move coins to a wallet you control and turn on app-based 2FA and an address allowlist.

How do I withdraw from Coinbase to my bank?

Sell the crypto into a currency your local Coinbase entity supports, such as SGD or INR, then choose Withdraw and pick your linked bank account. Whether this works, and how fast, depends on the local entity and banking rails. Where Coinbase has no local-currency rail, you cannot cash out to a local bank directly. See our cash-out guide for other routes.
