How do you buy USDT, and why does it cause so much trouble? For many readers in Asia, Tether's USDT is less an investment than a tool. Taiwanese traders watch the USDT/TWD rate like a currency pair, freelancers in Pakistan and Bangladesh get paid in it, and Korean users buy it at home before moving it to offshore exchanges. Because it is used so widely, it is also the coin most often involved in scams, frozen accounts and lost transfers.
This guide covers USDT and other stablecoins. General buying routes and costs are in how to buy crypto, and P2P rules in our P2P guide. Readers in mainland China should note that stablecoins fall under the 2021 ban on crypto trading services there; see our China legal-status page.
01USDT vs USDC vs Asia's local stablecoins
A stablecoin is a crypto token pegged to a traditional currency. USDT, issued by Tether, tracks the US dollar 1:1 and is the most widely circulated stablecoin in the world. USDC, issued by Circle, is also dollar-pegged. Both should trade at about $1. They differ in who issues them, how reserves are reported and which rules apply.
USDT (Tether)
- Default on Asian P2P and exchanges
- Most circulation on TRON (TRC-20)
- Supported by almost every exchange
- Reserve transparency long questioned
USDC (Circle)
- More formal reserve reporting
- Within a US regulatory framework
- Handled by SBI VC Trade in Japan as an "electronic payment instrument"
- Thinner liquidity on some Asian P2P markets
Alongside dollar stablecoins, locally regulated stablecoins in Asian currencies are starting to appear. Liquidity is still thin, but they are worth knowing about:
| Stablecoin | Pegged to | Issuer / regulation | Status (October 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| XSGD | Singapore dollar | StraitsX, holder of MAS Major Payment Institution licences | Main SGD stablecoin; minted and redeemed via PayNow/FAST |
| JPYC | Japanese yen | Registered Japanese funds-transfer provider | Launched 27 Oct 2025, Japan's first yen stablecoin |
| HKD stablecoins (HKDAP and others) | Hong Kong dollar | HKMA licensed HSBC and Anchorpoint in April 2026 | HKDAP in institutional beta since August; retail from end-2026 at the earliest |
| PHPC | Philippine peso | Coins.ph, via the BSP sandbox | Exited the sandbox in 2025 |
| KGST | Kyrgyz som | National Bank of the Kyrgyz Republic, on BNB Chain | Launched October 2025 and listed on Binance |
| IDRT / XIDR | Indonesian rupiah | Private issuers | Small liquidity |
Local stablecoins are listed for information only, not as recommendations. Stablecoin rules in Thailand, Malaysia, Taiwan and South Korea are still being drafted or piloted.
02How to buy USDT: the rules differ by country
Stablecoins are getting their own laws across Asia, so where you can buy them varies more than for other coins:
- Thailand: the Thai SEC approved USDT and USDC as base trading pairs on licensed platforms from 16 March 2025, so you can buy them with baht on Bitkub, Binance TH and others.
- Taiwan: USDT is the main bridge coin after a TWD deposit. MAX and BitoPro both run USDT/TWD markets, and many people treat that rate as an FX quote.
- South Korea: there is no exchange P2P, so users buy on the USDT/KRW markets of won exchanges. KRW purchases of stablecoins reached about $64 billion in the 12 months to June 2025, and the USDT/KRW price is watched as a gauge of the "kimchi premium".
- Hong Kong: the Stablecoins Ordinance (Cap. 656) took effect on 1 August 2025. Only stablecoins from HKMA-licensed issuers may be offered to retail. USDT is not licensed, and the government has said OTC shops cannot offer such stablecoins to retail customers.
- Singapore: USDT and USDC are widely available on MAS-licensed platforms, and XSGD is the local option.
- Japan: USDC leads, handled by SBI VC Trade as an electronic payment instrument, and the JPYC yen stablecoin is live.
- India: USDT dominates P2P. On 1 October 2026 the best Binance P2P buy price was about Rs 102.8 against a mid-market rate of about Rs 96, a premium of roughly 7%. In September 2026 the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) warned that above-market offers to buy USDT may involve money obtained through fraud.
- Pakistan: mostly Binance P2P paid by Easypaisa, bank transfer, SadaPay and others, at a premium of about 2%.
- Philippines and Indonesia: licensed platforms such as Coins.ph, GCash GCrypto (from 1 USDT) and Indodax list USDT.
Bangladesh Bank prohibits crypto trading. We show its premium only to describe the market, not as a buying route. Vietnam, Myanmar and mainland China are covered on their own country pages.
03Which chain: TRC-20, ERC-20, BNB Chain or Solana?
The same USDT exists on several blockchains. You do not choose a chain when you buy, only when you withdraw or deposit. These are the four you will meet most often in Asia:
| Network | Address format | Fee level | Watch out |
|---|---|---|---|
| TRON TRC-20 | Starts with T | Low; about 1 USDT at many exchanges | Most used for Asian P2P and exchange transfers, and the chain most associated with scams and freezes |
| Ethereum ERC-20 | Starts with 0x | Highest, more when busy | Widest compatibility; you need ETH in the wallet for gas |
| BNB Chain BEP-20 | Starts with 0x | Very low | USDT here is usually a Binance-bridged version; the address looks identical to Ethereum, so it is the easiest to confuse |
| Solana SPL | Base58 string | Very low | Fast; needs a Solana-capable wallet |
Exchanges set their own withdrawal fees. The withdrawal screen shows the real figure.
There is one rule for choosing: find out which chain the receiver supports, then pick exactly the same network on both sides. If the receiver supports several, choose the cheapest of those. When sending to your own wallet, check it has that network added. If you receive USDT on Ethereum or BNB Chain, remember you will also need a little ETH or BNB to move it again. Ethereum networks are covered in more depth in our Ethereum guide.
04Wrong-network transfers: the most expensive USDT mistake
Another common trap is clipboard hijacking, where malware quietly swaps the address you copied for a scammer's. Always re-check the first and last characters after pasting. Exchange-to-exchange transfers may also need recipient details under the Travel Rule; see our Travel Rule guide.

05How to buy USDT step by step
- Check the local rules
Find out whether retail purchases of USDT are allowed where you live and which platforms are licensed (see above and our country guides).
- Open and verify an account on a licensed platform
Complete KYC, then switch on authenticator-app 2FA and a withdrawal whitelist.
- Deposit local currency and buy
A limit order on the USDT/local-currency market is cheapest. You can also buy BTC or ETH first and swap.
- If withdrawing, choose the network
Confirm which network the receiver supports and match it exactly on the withdrawal screen. Fill in any memo.
- Send a small test first
Once it arrives, send the rest. Keep records for tax.
Prefer to buy crypto directly with a card? Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay and Google Pay are accepted, and it takes minutes.International platform, not licensed by Asian regulators; not available to residents of Japan, Singapore or India.
Get startedIf P2P is the only way to buy USDT where you live, trade only with verified merchants, pay only from an account in your own name, refuse any third-party payment, and be especially suspicious of anyone offering to buy above the market rate. More in our P2P guide.
06Stablecoins are not risk-free

Depeg risk. A stablecoin is only as good as its issuer's reserves. When Silicon Valley Bank failed in March 2023, USDC briefly fell below $1.
Freeze risk. Both Tether and Circle can freeze tokens at specific addresses, and law-enforcement requests to freeze addresses linked to crime are common. Receiving USDT of unknown origin can get you caught up.
Regulatory risk. Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan and South Korea are all writing stablecoin rules, and coins without local approval may be restricted for retail.
There is also platform risk, since USDT left on an exchange is held by the exchange, and scam risk. The final step of many pig-butchering scams is persuading the victim to buy USDT and send it to an "investment platform". If anyone asks you to send USDT to an address they choose in exchange for "fixed returns", stop.

FAQ
What is the safest way to buy USDT?
Buy with local currency on a platform licensed where you live. In Taiwan, MAX and BitoPro run USDT/TWD markets; in Thailand, licensed venues have offered USDT since March 2025; Korean exchanges list USDT/KRW. Where there is no local option, use an international platform that accepts residents of your country. On P2P, be wary of prices well away from the market rate, which are often linked to scam money.
Should I withdraw USDT on TRC-20 or ERC-20?
Use whichever network the receiver supports. TRC-20 (TRON) is cheap and the most common network for Asian P2P and exchange transfers. ERC-20 (Ethereum) has the widest compatibility but usually higher fees. BNB Chain and Solana are cheap too. Both sides must use the same network; TRON addresses start with T, while Ethereum and BNB Chain addresses start with 0x.
Can I recover USDT sent on the wrong network?
Sometimes. If it went to a wallet whose keys you control and which supports both chains, you can usually recover it. If it went to an exchange deposit address that does not support the network you used, it may never be credited automatically, and recovery depends on support staff, may cost a fee or be refused. Transfers to a chain with an incompatible address format are often lost. Always test with a small amount first.
What is the difference between USDT and USDC?
Both are stablecoins pegged 1:1 to the US dollar. USDT is issued by Tether and dominates Asian P2P markets and the TRON network. USDC is issued by Circle, has more formal reserve reporting and sits within a US regulatory framework. In Japan, SBI VC Trade handles USDC as an "electronic payment instrument". Both issuers can freeze addresses, and both coins have briefly lost their peg in the past.
Can I buy USDT in Hong Kong?
Hong Kong’s Stablecoins Ordinance (Cap. 656) took effect on 1 August 2025. Only stablecoins from HKMA-licensed issuers may be offered to retail investors, and USDT is not one of them. The government has said over-the-counter shops cannot offer specified stablecoins such as USDT to retail customers. The HKMA granted its first issuer licences to HSBC and Anchorpoint in April 2026, so HKD stablecoins are on the way.
