01Custodial vs self-custody: the difference that matters
Many people assume coins “on the exchange” are coins “in my wallet”. They aren’t. The balance you see on Binance, Coinbase or OKX is held for you by the platform; only when you hold the private keys do the coins truly belong to you. This guide to the best crypto wallets covers that second kind, self-custody software wallets (often called hot wallets). For cold storage, see our hardware wallet comparison.
Custodial (exchange account)
- The platform holds the keys
- A forgotten password can be reset
- Exposed to hacks, freezes and collapses
- Convenient for small trading balances
Self-custody (software wallet)
- You hold the recovery phrase and keys
- Nobody can freeze it, and nobody can restore it
- Connects directly to DeFi, NFTs and dApps
- Suited to long-term holding and on-chain use
In between sit “keyless” MPC wallets such as Binance Wallet inside the Binance app. The private key is split into shares, with the platform helping to hold some of them. You skip writing down a recovery phrase, but recovery depends on your platform account, so it is not self-custody in the classic sense.
02The 11 wallets and their official sites
The table is ordered by our overall score. All of these wallets are free to use; what you pay is network (gas) fees and the spread on built-in swaps. Use the links here or the official app stores rather than search ads.

Scores are editorial (out of 10), weighing security design, ease of use, chain support and transparency. Supported chains change; check the official site.
03UX scores: onboarding, app, extension and security prompts
We don’t judge wallets on how many chains they list. We ask whether an ordinary person can do three things without mistakes: back up the recovery phrase, receive funds and send to someone else. “Security prompts” measures whether the wallet explains clearly what a signature will authorise and warns you about suspicious contracts.
MetaMaskmetamask.io ↗
The extension is irreplaceable; the mobile app is a bit complex for beginners, and network switching takes some learning.
Trust Wallettrustwallet.com ↗

Complete on phone and extension with a built-in DEX aggregator; feature-rich and a little crowded.
Phantomphantom.com ↗
One of the best-looking wallets, with clear transaction previews and the best Solana experience.
Rabbyrabby.io ↗
Simulates balance changes before you sign and gives the most detailed approval warnings; the mobile app is newer.
imTokentoken.im ↗
Natural Chinese interface and a smooth TRON USDT flow; essentially mobile-only.
Bitget Walletweb3.bitget.com ↗
Smooth on mobile with many entry points to new tokens and campaigns; heavy on promotions.
TokenPockettokenpocket.pro ↗
Huge chain list and plenty of Chinese-language help; dense screens take getting used to.
For reference, on the Japanese App Store MetaMask is rated 4.62 (about 15,400 ratings) and Bitget Wallet 4.78. In Korea the figures are 4.77 and 4.8, and in Taiwan 4.76 and 4.72. On Google Play India, Trust Wallet has more than 50 million installs and a 4.6 rating. Store ratings reflect day-to-day experience, not security.
04Choosing a wallet by chain and use case
Holding USDT: check the chain first
The USDT that changes hands most on Asian P2P markets runs on TRON (TRC-20). If that is your main use, imToken, TokenPocket and Trust Wallet all handle it well; MetaMask does not support TRON by default. Always check that the address and network match before sending. TRC-20 and ERC-20 addresses look different, and coins sent on the wrong chain are often unrecoverable. See how to buy USDT.
Ethereum, DeFi and layer 2s
MetaMask is still the most compatible choice and works with almost every dApp. If you use DeFi on a computer a lot, add Rabby: it simulates each transaction before you sign and shows which assets an approval would let a contract move.
Solana and new tokens
Phantom is the default for Solana. OKX Wallet and Bitget Wallet offer more doorways into new multi-chain tokens and airdrops. New tokens and airdrops are also where scams cluster, so don’t tap “claim” on tokens you don’t recognise.
Already using an exchange
Coinbase users will find the Base app easiest, OKX users OKX Wallet, and Binance users Binance Wallet or Trust Wallet. Remember that a self-custody wallet and an exchange account are separate things: exchange support cannot recover your wallet’s recovery phrase.
Prefer desktop software
Exodus’s desktop app is attractive and reassuring for long-term holders, but its built-in swaps carry wide spreads. Do large conversions on an exchange instead.

06Fake APKs and recovery phrases: the two rules that matter most

A recovery phrase (12 or 24 English words) restores all your assets on any device. Whoever has it owns your coins. That makes it far more important, and far more dangerous, than a password.
- Write it on paper only
When you create the wallet, write the words down in order and check them twice. For the long term, consider a fire- and water-proof metal backup plate.
- Never digitise it
No screenshots, photos, cloud storage, notes apps, messages or email. If your phone is compromised, photos and chats can be read.
- Store copies separately
Keep it somewhere safe at home, ideally in two places, and make sure one trusted family member knows it exists and where.
- Give it to nobody
Wallet teams, exchange support and “airdrop sites” never need your phrase. Any page asking you to type it in is phishing.
- Clean up approvals
Revoke old dApp approvals regularly and don’t interact with unknown tokens. For large sums, consider a hardware wallet.

07Can you use a crypto wallet under 18?
This question comes up often, and it deserves an honest answer.
Technically, a self-custody software wallet needs no identity check, so anyone can download one. Contractually, most wallets set an age rule. Trust Wallet’s terms require users to be at least 18 and legally competent. MetaMask’s terms say that users under the age of majority in their jurisdiction may use it only with the consent or supervision of a parent or legal guardian. And to turn money into crypto you have to pass an exchange’s identity verification, which is normally open to adults only.
Our advice: a teenager curious about blockchains can learn wallet basics with a parent, using a test network or a tiny amount. Don’t open an exchange account using a parent’s or anyone else’s identity. It breaks platform terms and can get the account and funds frozen. Parents may find our beginner’s guide a useful starting point.
FAQ
What is the best crypto wallet for beginners?
It depends on the chain you use. For Ethereum and other EVM chains, MetaMask is the most compatible. For one simple app that handles many chains, try Trust Wallet or OKX Wallet. For USDT on TRON, Chinese-speaking users often pick imToken or TokenPocket, and for Solana, Phantom is the natural choice. Whichever you choose, download it only from the official site or app store and write the recovery phrase on paper.
What is the difference between an exchange account and a wallet?
An exchange account is custodial: the platform holds the keys, so you can reset a forgotten password, but a hack, freeze or collapse hits your coins too. A self-custody wallet puts the keys and recovery phrase in your hands. Nobody can freeze it, and nobody can restore it for you: lose the phrase and the coins are gone for good. Keep small trading balances on an exchange and long-term holdings in self-custody.
Can I use a crypto wallet if I am under 18?
It depends on the wallet’s terms and local law. Trust Wallet’s terms require users to be at least 18. MetaMask’s terms say users under the age of majority where they live may use it only with the consent or supervision of a parent or legal guardian. Buying crypto with money needs exchange identity checks, which are normally for adults only. Don’t open accounts in a parent’s name; that breaks platform terms and can get funds frozen.
Why shouldn’t I download wallet APKs from random links?
Fake wallet APKs are one of the most common ways people lose crypto, especially counterfeit imToken and TokenPocket builds aimed at Chinese-speaking users. The fake looks identical but sends your recovery phrase to the scammer. Download only from the wallet’s official website or the official app stores, check the developer name and domain, and never install files sent in chats, ads or by “support” agents.
How should I store my recovery phrase?
Write it on paper, or stamp it into a metal plate, and keep it somewhere safe at home, ideally in two locations. Never screenshot it, photograph it, save it to cloud storage or notes, or send it to anyone. Any website, pop-up or “support agent” asking you to enter your recovery phrase is a scam. Real wallet teams never ask for it.
