Buying Ethereum: the purchase is the easy part; the network choice saves you money

Buying ETH on an exchange is as simple as buying Bitcoin. The real skill comes afterwards: understanding gas, why one address works on several chains, and how much an L2 withdrawal can save.

How do you buy Ethereum? Getting hold of some ETH takes minutes: open an exchange account, deposit, place an order. But Ethereum differs from Bitcoin in one big way. It is a platform that runs applications, and a whole family of "layer 2" networks has grown up around it. So when you withdraw you face a long list of networks. Pick well and you save most of the fee. Pick badly and your coins can go missing.

This guide covers what is specific to Ethereum (ETH). For the general routes and a cost comparison, see how to buy crypto. For Bitcoin, see how to buy Bitcoin.

01Where to buy Ethereum in Asia

ETH is the second-largest crypto asset by market value and almost every exchange lists it, including in the strictest retail markets. In Hong Kong it is one of only four coins OSL offers to retail investors, and brokers and virtual banks such as Tiger, ZA Bank and Mox offer it through licensed platforms. In Japan it is the second most traded coin: the Japan Virtual and Crypto Assets Exchange Association (JVCEA) recorded about ¥130 billion of ETH spot trading in July 2026.

The rule for choosing a platform is the same as for any coin: for local-currency deposits, use a locally licensed platform first. In Hong Kong, look at SFC-licensed platforms. In Taiwan, look at FSC-registered VASPs such as MAX and BitoPro. In Japan, use a JFSA-registered exchange, and in Thailand an SEC-licensed venue. If nothing suitable exists locally, or you want a quick small card purchase, use an international platform that accepts residents of your country.

Check one more thing before you sign up: which ETH withdrawal networks the platform supports. If you plan to use your ETH in a wallet, a platform that lets you withdraw on Arbitrum, Base or Optimism will save you a meaningful amount over time.

02How to buy ETH in five steps

  1. Choose a compliant platform

Pick one using the rule above and confirm it on the regulator’s register. Glance at its list of ETH withdrawal networks too.

  2. Sign up, verify, secure

Complete KYC, then switch on authenticator-app 2FA and a withdrawal whitelist.

  3. Deposit

A local transfer (FPS, PayNow, PromptPay, UPI and so on) is cheapest. For a small first buy, a card or Apple Pay is fine.

  4. Buy ETH

Use the ETH/local-currency or ETH/USDT pair. A limit order is cheapest; on a convert screen, check how much ETH you will receive.

  5. Decide where it lives

Small, short-term amounts can stay on the platform. To use apps or hold long-term, withdraw to your own wallet on the right network (see below).

03What Ethereum gas fees are

Every transfer and every interaction with a smart contract on Ethereum costs a "gas" fee, paid to the network in ETH. Think of it as a road toll: the more complex the trip and the heavier the traffic, the higher the toll. Gas prices are usually quoted in gwei. One gwei is a billionth of an ETH.

Since the 2021 London upgrade (EIP-1559), each fee has two parts. A base fee adjusts automatically with congestion and is burned. A tip goes to the validator. That is why the same transfer can cost several times more during a hot token launch than in the small hours of a quiet weekend.

For buyers, three points matter most:

  • Trading ETH inside an exchange costs no gas. It is internal bookkeeping; you pay only the trading fee.
  • When you withdraw, you pay the exchange's withdrawal fee. It is normally a fixed amount per network, shown on the withdrawal screen, and mainnet and L2 fees can differ widely.
  • Keep a little ETH in your wallet for gas. If you withdraw an ERC-20 token such as USDT to an Ethereum wallet without any ETH, you will not be able to move that token again.

Network gas prices move with congestion; exchange withdrawal fees are usually a flat amount per network.

04Cheaper withdrawals on L2: Arbitrum, Base and Optimism

Layer 2 networks process transactions away from Ethereum and post compressed results back to the main chain, inheriting its security while cutting the cost per transaction dramatically. The Dencun upgrade in March 2024 made posting that data much cheaper, and since then a simple transfer on a major L2 typically costs a few cents or less.

NetworkTypeGood forWatch out
Ethereum mainnet
ERC-20
Layer 1Large holdings, hardware wallets, exchange-to-exchange transfersHighest fees; supported everywhere
Arbitrum OneOptimistic rollup (L2)Everyday transfers, DeFi appsNative bridge back to mainnet takes about 7 days

OP Mainnet (Optimism)Optimistic rollup (L2)Everyday transfers, on-chain appsAs above; some exchanges support only a few L2s

Supported networks and fees vary by exchange. Confirm the network name and fee on the withdrawal screen before sending.

An L2 only works if the receiver is on the same L2. Your own MetaMask is fine: switch to that network and the balance appears. Sending to another exchange is different, and you must confirm it accepts ETH deposits on that exact L2. The roughly seven-day wait applies to the official bridge from an L2 back to Ethereum mainnet. Withdrawing from an exchange straight to an L2, or moving funds between networks through an exchange, usually avoids it.

05ERC-20 vs L2 addresses: one 0x, many networks

Ethereum and every Ethereum-compatible (EVM) network use the same address format: 0x followed by 40 hexadecimal characters. Your MetaMask address is therefore identical on Ethereum mainnet, Arbitrum, Base, Optimism and even BNB Chain. That is convenient, and it is also how many people lose money.

With a self-custody wallet, a wrong-network transfer is usually recoverable. The coins land at the same address on another chain, and you can switch networks, see them and send them back, provided you have gas on that chain. With an exchange it is far riskier. Deposit addresses are network-specific, so if you send ETH on Base to an address that only accepts mainnet deposits, it may not be credited. Recovery then depends on support staff, may carry a fee, and is sometimes refused outright.

It also helps to separate "ETH" from "ERC-20 tokens". ETH is Ethereum's native coin. USDT, USDC and thousands of others are tokens that run on Ethereum under the ERC-20 standard. All are received at the same 0x address but shown separately in your wallet. Choosing a network for USDT gets its own section in our USDT guide.

06Wallets: MetaMask and hardware wallets

Mobile e-wallet illustration, representing storing Ethereum in MetaMask

MetaMask is the most widely used self-custody wallet for Ethereum, available as a browser extension and a mobile app, and you can add Arbitrum, Base, Optimism and other networks. It is built for decentralised apps, but it is not the most beginner-friendly, so read every signature request carefully.

Chinese-speaking users also rely on imToken, OKX Wallet and Trust Wallet. Download only from official sites or app stores, because fake wallet apps are a common scam.

For larger long-term holdings, pair MetaMask with a Ledger or Trezor hardware wallet.

Whatever wallet you choose, write the seed phrase on paper. Do not screenshot it, store it in the cloud or type it into any website. Fuller comparisons are in our guides to crypto wallets and hardware wallets.

07Staking ETH: read the risks before the yield

Ethereum completed "the Merge" in September 2022, moving from proof of work to proof of stake. Holders can now stake ETH to help validate the network and earn rewards. There are three common routes: running your own validator (32 ETH plus technical know-how), an exchange staking product, or a liquid-staking protocol that gives you a tradeable receipt token.

We do not rate yields. These are the risks to weigh:

  • Platform risk. Staking on an exchange leaves the platform holding your ETH. If it fails, your staked ETH is caught up too.
  • Liquidity risk. Unstaking can mean a queue, so you may not be able to sell quickly in a volatile market, and receipt tokens can trade below ETH.
  • Slashing and contract risk. Validators that break the rules lose part of their stake, and liquid-staking protocols carry smart-contract risk.
  • Rules and tax. MAS Guidelines PS-G03 bar Singapore-licensed platforms from offering staking to retail customers. India taxes staking rewards at slab rates on receipt, and Thailand's tax exemption for licensed platforms does not cover staking income.

Next, compare ETH withdrawal fees in our exchange fee comparison, or browse the exchange rankings for a platform that is compliant where you live and supports L2 withdrawals. FAQ

What is the cheapest way to buy Ethereum?

Usually a licensed exchange where you live, funded by local bank transfer, with a limit order on the ETH/local-currency pair. In Hong Kong that means SFC-licensed platforms such as OSL or HashKey; in Japan, a JFSA-registered exchange; in Thailand, an SEC-licensed venue like Bitkub. Cards are fastest but cost about 2–5%. When withdrawing, an L2 such as Arbitrum, Base or Optimism saves a lot on fees if your wallet supports it.

What are Ethereum gas fees and who pays them?

Gas is the fee paid to the network to process a transfer or smart-contract action on Ethereum. It is paid in ETH and usually quoted in gwei, a billionth of an ETH, and it rises when the network is busy. Buying and selling ETH inside an exchange costs no gas. You only pay when moving ETH on-chain; exchanges then charge a flat withdrawal fee per network.

Can one 0x address receive ETH on mainnet and on L2s?

In a self-custody wallet such as MetaMask, the same 0x address works on Ethereum mainnet, Arbitrum, Base and Optimism, but each network holds a separate balance and you switch networks to see it. Exchanges are different: their deposit addresses are network-specific, and a deposit on the wrong network may not be credited or may be impossible to recover. Always match the network on both sides.

Can I stake the ETH I buy, and what are the risks?

Ethereum moved to proof of stake in September 2022, so holders can stake ETH to help secure the network and earn rewards. Risks include the platform failing or being hacked, waiting in an unstaking queue, liquid-staking tokens trading below ETH, slashing of misbehaving validators, and tax on rewards. MAS rules bar Singapore-licensed platforms from offering staking to retail customers. We do not give investment advice.
