The best crypto apps to buy and trade, tested tap by tap

Most people buy their first crypto on a phone. One misplaced button or a fee hidden on the third screen can cost you money or send an order the wrong way. We took 8 apps through sign-up, ID checks and a first purchase on iPhone and Android, and scored what it was actually like.

  • 4.4CEX.IO rating on iOS
  • 4.1CEX.IO rating on Google Play
  • US FinCEN-registered MSB
  • Money transmitter licences in 30+ US states
  • PCI DSS Level 1

BuyCrypto.asia editorial team Data checked: October 2026 Updated:

Which is the best crypto app? The answer is rarely on the feature list. It is in the path your thumb takes: how many taps from opening the app to owning your first Bitcoin, which screen the fee appears on, and whether the app tells you what to do when ID verification stalls.

This page is only about the mobile experience. For which exchanges are licensed where you live and which charge least, see our best crypto exchanges. For pro charts, copy trading or demo accounts, see the best crypto trading platforms.

01How we test crypto apps

On one iPhone and one Android phone we took each app through the whole journey: download, registration, identity verification (KYC), adding a payment method, a small purchase and the security settings. Then we scored five areas from 1 to 5. These are editorial judgements, not stopwatch measurements, and we will not invent figures like "verified in 7 minutes 32 seconds".

  1. Sign-up and KYC

Can you finish it all in the app: photograph your ID, pass the selfie liveness check, enter your address? Are errors explained clearly when something fails?

  2. Buy flow

How many taps from home screen to payment; whether buy and sell are impossible to confuse; whether Apple Pay, Google Pay and cards work directly.

  3. Fee clarity

Are trading fee, card fee and spread shown separately before you confirm, or rolled into one total?

  4. Security features

Biometric login, authenticator 2FA, an anti-phishing code, a withdrawal whitelist and new-device alerts.

  5. Beginner friendliness

Is there a simple mode; are futures and leverage kept apart from spot; do push notifications nudge you to trade more?

02Crypto app UX scores: 8 apps compared

These are our mobile experience scores, separate from the overall exchange ranking: a cheap, well-licensed exchange does not always have the easiest app, and vice versa. The CEX.IO app is rated 4.4 on the Apple App Store and 4.1 on Google Play. Other apps' store ratings vary so much by country and date that we do not quote them here.

CEX.IOcex.io ↗

The home screen is the buy screen, with Apple Pay, Google Pay and Visa/Mastercard; the card fee is itemised on the confirmation page. Not for residents of Japan, Singapore or India.

The table adds detail the scorecards cannot show. In the language column we only state what we could confirm; where we could not, we say "check in the app" rather than guess. Every app listed works in English.

A simple habit: before confirming any purchase, note the "you pay" and "you receive" lines and compare them with the market price. Many "zero-fee" apps give themselves away at this step, because the cost is hiding in the quote.

04Local licensed exchange apps: the store ratings we verified

In Japan, Taiwan, Korea or India, a local licensed exchange app is often the cheapest way to buy with local currency. Below are ratings we checked through Apple's iTunes API and Google Play on 1 October 2026, with the store country in brackets, because the same app can score very differently from one country to the next.

05Fake apps and APK scams: the most common trap

Among Chinese-speaking users, fake exchange and wallet apps are one of the most common ways crypto gets stolen. The pattern is familiar: a search ad, a chat group or a "support agent" sends you a link to the "official Android APK". The app looks nearly identical to the real one, and once you log in or import a seed phrase your funds are gone. A variant is the fake "investment platform" app whose balance keeps climbing until you try to withdraw and are told to "pay tax first".

Pros

  • Install only from the official App Store, Google Play or the exchange's own download page
  • Check the developer name and download count before installing
  • Open the website from a bookmark, never from an ad
  • Set an anti-phishing code and check it in every official email

Cons

  • Downloading an "official APK" from a chat, DM or file-sharing link
  • Installing anything that asks you to allow "unknown sources"
  • Typing your seed phrase into any app or website
  • Believing you must "pay a deposit" before you can withdraw

06Five settings to change on day one

Once the app is installed and your ID is verified, don't rush to deposit. Five minutes on these settings blocks most account takeovers. The full guide is in crypto security.

  1. Turn on authenticator-app 2FA

Use an authenticator such as Google Authenticator rather than SMS. If your SIM is hijacked, SMS codes go straight to the thief.

  2. Enable biometric login

Face or fingerprint unlock for the app, plus a strong passcode on the phone itself.

  3. Set an anti-phishing code

Every genuine email from the platform then carries your code. Treat any "official" email without it as phishing.

  4. Switch on the withdrawal whitelist

Withdrawals can only go to addresses you have added in advance, and new addresses usually face a waiting period.

  5. Mute notifications you don't need

Especially futures, leverage and "limited-time" promos. They exist to make you trade more, not to make you money.

FAQ

What is the best crypto app for beginners?

Beginners need smooth sign-up, few taps to buy and fees shown clearly before confirming. In our phone tests CEX.IO and Coinbase had the most direct buy flows, Crypto.com the most polished design, and Binance the most features, though beginners should switch to its Lite view first. Where a local licensed exchange app exists, such as bitbank in Japan or BitoPro in Taiwan, consider it first for local-currency deposits.

Are crypto trading apps safe, and which settings should I turn on?

Apps from regulated platforms are safe in themselves; the risks come from weak account settings and fake apps. Straight after installing, turn on authenticator-app 2FA (safer than SMS), biometric login, an anti-phishing code and a withdrawal whitelist. Download only from the official app stores or the exchange website, check the developer name, and treat anyone asking for codes or a seed phrase as a scammer.

Why can't I find exchange apps in the mainland China App Store?

In line with mainland Chinese regulatory requirements, Apple's China App Store has removed crypto exchange and wallet apps, and crypto trading services are illegal financial activity on the mainland. Links offering an "official Android APK" are a prime source of fake apps and theft. This page does not apply to mainland residents, and we do not provide any download or installation routes.

Do app store ratings tell you whether an app is good?

Only partly. Ratings vary hugely by store country: the same app can differ by two stars between the Taiwan and Korea stores, and Korean exchange apps typically sit at 2 to 2.8 stars on iOS because reviews are mostly complaints. What we publish is our own experience score after completing sign-up, verification and a purchase on iPhone and Android, not the store rating.

Is buying crypto in the app more expensive than on the website?

Most platforms use the same fee schedule on app and web, but apps put one-tap buy front and centre, and its quote includes a spread that usually costs more than a limit order in the pro view. To save money, switch to the trade or pro screen and use limit orders. Card purchases add a separate card fee of roughly 1–5%; at CEX.IO it is 0.49% to 4.99% plus a service charge.
