South Korea’s crypto exchanges ranked: all five won exchanges compared

Only five Korean exchanges let you trade with won, and Upbit and Bithumb together take about 90% of the volume. Choosing between them means weighing fees, coin lists and which bank you are willing to open an account with.

01The best crypto exchanges in South Korea for 2026

South Korea has 28 virtual asset service providers registered with KoFIU, but only five of them let you buy crypto with won: Upbit, Bithumb, Coinone, Digital X (formerly Korbit) and Gopax. The rest are coin-to-coin or custody platforms. So when Koreans search for an exchange ranking (암호화폐 거래소 순위), these five are the real contenders.

How we score: liquidity and market share 25%, KRW trading fees 25%, coin coverage 15%, app and website experience 15%, security and compliance record 20%. That last criterion costs the top two some points: Upbit was hacked and Dunamu fined in 2025, and Bithumb received a record fine in 2026. Our approach is in how we rate, and the sign-up steps are in how to buy bitcoin in South Korea.

  1. Best overall · deepest liquidity

UpbitDunamu · VASP report No. 2021-01

About 64% of Korean trading happens here. Normal orders in the KRW market cost 0.05% maker and taker, there are 290 won markets, and the partner bank is K Bank. The downsides are real: about ₩44.5bn was stolen from a hot wallet in November 2025, and operator Dunamu was fined ₩35.2bn for AML breaches in 2025. Dunamu is merging into Naver Financial (share-swap date moved to 31 December 2026).

    • 290 won markets

    • Won withdrawal ₩1,000
  2. Most coins · 0.04% with coupon

    BithumbBithumb Korea

Roughly 26% market share and 481 won markets, the most of any Korean exchange. The standard fee is 0.25%, but applying for its “domestic lowest fee” coupon cuts it to 0.04% for 30 days, and point-shop coupons can make trades free. The partner bank is KB Kookmin. In March 2026 it received a record fine of about ₩36bn and a six-month partial suspension restricting new customers’ external transfers.

  3. No. 3 · zero-fee vouchers

CoinoneKorea Investment & Securities · OKX Ventures (20% each)

About 6.7% share and 362 won markets. Published figures put the list fee at 0.20%, and zero-fee vouchers have been offered since 26 August 2026. Since May 2026 Korea Investment & Securities and OKX Ventures each hold 20%. Its partner bank is reportedly KakaoBank. A 2.68★ App Store rating is upper-middle for Korea.

  4. Brokerage-backed · new brand

    Digital X (ex-Korbit)Mirae Asset group

Korbit, Korea’s first bitcoin exchange, was renamed Digital X after Mirae Asset completed its acquisition on 22 July 2026. It has about 2.9% share and 227 trading pairs, and published figures put its list fee at 0.15%, with frequent promotions. Its partner bank is reportedly Shinhan.

  5. Binance group

    GopaxStreami · Binance-owned

Binance is the majority owner, after KoFIU approved the change of ownership in October 2025. It has 110 won markets and, per published figures, a 0.20% fee, but only about 0.01% market share, so liquidity is thin. Its partner bank is reportedly Jeonbuk Bank.

Upbit and Bithumb fees come from their official pages (checked October 2026). Fees and partner banks for Coinone, Digital X and Gopax come from published sources and may change with promotions, so confirm on the official site. Won-market counts come from each exchange’s public API (1 October 2026).

02Market share: Upbit dominates

Korea is one of Asia's most concentrated crypto markets. In Q1 2026, the five won exchanges traded ₩318.3 trillion between them, with Upbit taking 63.7% and Bithumb 26.1%. By mid-September the picture had barely moved:

  • Upbit≈ 64%
  • Bithumb≈ 26.3%
  • Coinone≈ 6.7%
  • Digital X (ex-Korbit)≈ 2.9%
  • Gopax≈ 0.01%

Share means liquidity. A large order on Upbit usually moves the price least, while a thinly traded coin on Gopax may sit unfilled for a long time. The market as a whole is cooling, though: FIU data show average daily trading of ₩3.1 trillion in H1 2026, down 44% on the previous period, and exchange operating profit down 78%.

04App and website experience

Bitcoin neon signs on an Asian night-market street, evoking Korea’s active trading culture
Korean retail traders trade often, so price-feed speed and order flow matter more than anything.

Korean exchange apps typically score only 2–2.8★ in the App Store, largely because reviews are complaint-driven (crashes, listing disputes, maintenance downtime), so the ratings say little about interface quality. We give our own editorial scores for website, mobile app and onboarding, with App Store figures for reference.

05Which Korean exchange for which need

Your first bitcoin, and you want the most reliable liquidity: Upbit. The 0.05% fee is transparent, with no coupons to keep track of. More altcoins, and happy to manage coupons: Bithumb, with 481 won markets and 0.04% after the coupon. A clean interface, or you already bank with KakaoBank: Coinone. You prefer a brokerage name behind the exchange: Digital X, owned by Mirae Asset. Gopax is currently too illiquid for us to recommend as a main exchange.

Many people keep two accounts, say Upbit for majors and Bithumb for altcoins, at the cost of a second bank account. Every won exchange has a USDT/KRW market, so you don't need P2P to buy stablecoins. And with a 22% tax possibly arriving in 2027, keep your own cost records from now on; Korean exchanges retain full trade histories. 06Want to buy by card? The international option

Since 2018, Korean card issuers have generally refused crypto purchases, and local exchanges don't offer card buying. If you specifically want to pay with Visa, Mastercard or Apple Pay, you can look at an international platform that accepts Korean residents, as long as you understand how it differs from a local exchange.

  1. Card purchases · not registered in Korea

    CEX.IOFounded 2013 · international platform

Korean exchanges don’t take cards; CEX.IO lets you buy with Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay or Google Pay. It accepts residents of South Korea, but some coins are unavailable to Korean users. It is not registered with KoFIU: Korean customers are served by its international entity, local investor protection does not apply, and it is not on Upbit’s transfer whitelist.

    • Card fees 0.49–4.99% + service charge
    • Spot 0.15% / 0.25%
    • New accounts $1,000/day

07Overseas exchanges and transfer whitelists

Korean users often ask whether overseas exchanges (해외 거래소) are an option. Under Upbit's whitelist (version of 23 September 2026), Binance, OKX, Bybit, Bitget, Gate, Crypto.com and others allow two-way transfers. Coinbase, Kraken and bitbank can only send coins into Upbit, and unregistered platforms such as KuCoin, MEXC and BingX are blocked entirely. From 20 February 2027, the ₩1 million Travel Rule threshold will go, and every exchange-to-exchange transfer will need sender and recipient details.

Being able to transfer is not the same as being licensed. None of these platforms' global sites is registered with KoFIU, serving Koreans carries legal risk, and Korean law will not protect you if something goes wrong. Transfer steps and common mistakes are in our Travel Rule guide, and platform track records in exchange safety and licences.

FAQ

What is the biggest crypto exchange in South Korea?

Upbit. In mid-September 2026 it handled about 64% of trading across Korea’s five won exchanges, ahead of Bithumb (about 26.3%), Coinone (6.7%), Digital X, formerly Korbit (2.9%), and Gopax (about 0.01%). Upbit is run by Dunamu, banks with K Bank and charges 0.05% in its KRW market.

Which Korean exchange has the lowest fees?

On standard rates, Upbit’s 0.05% KRW-market fee is the lowest. Bithumb’s standard rate is 0.25%, but with its “domestic lowest fee” coupon it drops to 0.04%, below Upbit; the coupon lasts 30 days and must be renewed. Coinone and Digital X list about 0.20% and 0.15% but often hand out zero-fee or discount vouchers.

Why do Korean exchanges require a specific bank account?

Under the Specified Financial Information Act, an exchange offering a won market needs a real-name deposit and withdrawal account partnership with a bank, which in practice means one bank per exchange: K Bank for Upbit and KB Kookmin for Bithumb, with Coinone, Digital X and Gopax reportedly using KakaoBank, Shinhan and Jeonbuk. Only accounts in your own name work.

Can I use Binance in South Korea?

Binance’s global site is not registered with KoFIU. Binance entered Korea by acquiring Gopax (approved in October 2025), where Koreans can trade with won. Upbit’s whitelist allows transfers to and from Binance under the Travel Rule, while unregistered platforms such as KuCoin and MEXC are blocked outright.
